退伍之後，我就接到昆霖打來說，看是不是要一起成立空間。就我印象比較深刻就是整理空間，包括像剛開始籌備的時候，換空間的時候。第一個成立的空間好像是在文化中心，台南文化 中心旁邊。我記得開幕展，那其他的，我覺得大部分的展覽都還是在後來那個民族路，火車站那 邊，主題展好像都是在那邊展。《房事展》好像是昆霖策畫的，然後它，我印象中比較深刻就是 隔成一個小空間一個小空間這樣，那一檔我反而比較有印象。因為他們要負責看會場或者是運作 空間，所以他們看會場的時候，遇到有什麼事情要交代或者是聯絡的時候，他們都會記在筆記本 上面。我對那個筆記本印象滿深刻，因為我以前都沒有注意到。還有就是我遠在台北嘛，所以看 到那個筆記本的時候，就是很多事情都會想起來，包括他們會在上面寫說誰來開會。
我有邀請昆霖來台北參加新樂園，那我那時候就有在想說，那其實台南的藝術家也可以到台北這邊來參加空間，所以那時候我也邀請昆霖，然後他有參加一屆。昆霖好像也是算原型藝術的 核心人物，我太太有在裡面展，我印象最深的就是那時候原型好像是在頂樓，那時我太太剛好搬 了一顆很大的石頭，要放到原型空間展，那印象比較深刻。
如果現在回想他，我覺得他真的是有藝術家性格。那個部分是我覺得 ，他那個熱情是我比 較缺少的。那這個跟創作態度還是有關係，但是他給我的那個印象跟狀態，是我以前所熟知的， 就是藝術家要全心投入他創作的部分，包括時間啊思想啊，他在大學的時候就有給我這樣的印象。 所以，有時候看到昆霖的時候，我會覺得以邊陲這樣來講，在初期他是最像藝術家。對於那個繪 畫跟創作的部分，你可以看得出來，他的熱情跟投注的心力，那個也是我一直覺得一個藝術家應 該要做的事情。
We were classmates in the Fine Arts Department. Then also members of “Border Culture Art Salon”. The same group at university. But everyone was... well, we were polite to each other. Just met and greeted each other and I knew Lee Kuen-Lin drew quite seriously. In fact I was not so serious.
After I was demobilized, I received his call. He asked me if I wanted to set up an art space together. I was more impressed by sorting out the space. Including our preparations at the beginning and changing location.The first location of “Border Culture Art Salon” was beside the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center. I remember our opening exhibition, other exhibitions; most of them were at the second place which was at National Road near the Tainan train station. All the theme exhibitions were done over there. The room exhibitions were planned by Lee Kuen-Lin. The part I was more impressed by was… He separated the space into many small spaces this exhibition impressed me a lot.
Because they were responsible for watching the venue and also the operation of the space. So when they were watching the venue when there was something they wanted to explain or wanted to connect. They wrote all of them in their notebooks. I was very surprised when I found out about this notebook. Because I did not notice it before. I was in Taipei, far away from Tainan. So when I saw the notebook lots of things came into my mind. For example, they wrote on who came to the meeting.
I invited him to participate in an artist group “SLY art space” in Taipei. At that time, I was thinking that…Tainan’s artist can also participate in the space in Taipei. So I also invited Lee Kuen-Lin and he participated in one session. He was the core figure of Prototype Art Space. My wife had an exhibition there. What impressed me the most was… Prototype Art Space was on the top floor at that time. My wife moved a big stone and put it into the space. It really impressed me.
When we are talking about things Lee Kuen-Lin rarely spoke. However, he would say the things he insisted on. Then when we were drinking, He could talk about anything. However, I remember... as if...we discussed something about art space. It was not a quarrel but it was for operating our art space. So we had a little dispute.
Now I think about him... I think he really had an artist’s personality. There is a part I think... his enthusiasm is what I relatively lack. This is still related to the attitude of creating artworks. However, the impression and the state he gave me were what I used to know. Artists need to concentrate completely on their creating, including timing and thought. He already gave me this kind of impression when he was in college. So sometimes when I saw Kuen-Lin I think in the case of Border Culture Art Salon, he was most like an artist. About painting and creating, you can see his enthusiasm and the effort he put in. That is also what I always think that an artist should do.
